Time For The Details
When I was raising my three daughters life was definitely in busy mode. Taking one to dance, one to volleyball practice, and getting dinner ready for the other seemed like I was always keeping the balls up in the air and trying not to drop one. I seemed to pride myself on multitasking and really believed I was good at each thing I was doing. It wasn’t until later in life when my daughters were grown and gone that I saw the value in doing one thing at a time. Being fully present in what I am doing in the moment. I also discovered great joy in the details of life. Looking around in appreciation of what shows up for me that day. Whether a single flower surrounded by gravel, or a beautiful rooster out of place amongst boutiques, or watching the sun set and seeing a white seagull cross the orange sky, these little details enrich my life.
I find great joy in creating details that I never really seemed to have time for before. When making a plate of cookies for a neighbor, a little velvet bow tied around the plate whispers you are special. Putting a few crystal candlesticks on a tray with a pitcher of extra candles brings a decorative touch to my coffee table. Or tying some fresh Rosemary to a gift makes it look just a little more handmade with love. The list can go on and on. When life is filled with too much busyness the details aren’t noticed, and there certainly isn’t time to create them. This is one very important reason simplifying life and doing less brings opportunity to create details, and notice details. Doing less and going deeper into what I am already doing sends the restless in me packing. There is great joy to be found in slowing down and looking for ways to add just a little something here and there that creates a little beauty. If I was a daughter in Pride and Prejudice, it for sure would be a beautiful hair ribbon!
Maybe you too may enjoy adding a little special detail to some of the things you do over the holidays that might show you put some thought into making someone feel special. It doesn’t take much to discover creative details. Have fun in finding the joy in the details.
